  • In the year 1600 the Penn family purchased land at Stony Stratford in North Buckinghamshire, England. They diverted the river – The Great Ouse – to establish a water mill in one corner of their land and they built a ‘Tann Yard’.

In those days the plague took the lives of many of the town’s inhabitants and these would been the equivalent of an isolation hospital. These would have been testing times for the history of the company.

  • Samuel Sharp was the sole owner of the business in the early eighteen hundreds but when he was joined by a Mr. Woollard in 1834 the title of Sharp & Woollard was adopted. In 1873 the company was awarded a prize medal for its harness leather at the first Northampton Leather Exhibition. In later years this exhibition was transferred to London to become the National Leather Exhibition.

  • In 1984 the leather manufacturing operation reverted to Samuel Sharp (Curriers) Ltd. and operated from Cosgrove factory in Milton Keynes.

Serving the equestrian sector of the leather market worldwide the companies hand curried leathers are renowned for their quality finish and performance. They also tanned, dressed and dyed furs.

  • Samuel Sharp was acquired by Joseph Clayton & Sons Chesterfield ltd in 1999 and production relocated to its Derbyshire base where today the tradition of hand finished leather is still alive and well.

  • Along with William Clarke, Clayton & Sons and J & E Sedgwick & Co. Samuel Sharp joined The Clayton Leather Group in 2015. This saw the creation of the largest vegetable tanning group in the UK.

  • The Clayton Leather Group launched their brand new website in January 2017. Giving you, the user, a great insight into the ethos and heritage behind each of the four companies within the Group, also helping you connect with us any which way. Whether that be through our social media channels or via email, the new website now links all of these paths together.
